“This is what hatred did” is the lapidary phrase with which Amos Tutuola’s novel “My Life in the Bush of Ghosts” ends, and for which he had to leave Nigeria due to the violent reactions it produced. It is also the starting point for photographer Cristina De Middel’s version of the gloomy story in the streets of Makoko, a floating neighborhood in the city of Lagos. There, spirits coexist with humans who are unable to escape, rituals as an everyday occurrence, and an atmosphere that gives rise to a phantasmagoric tale. Here is the book resulting from this project, which combines the original story of the Nigerian author with the reality of a country that suffers the heavy burden of the African stereotype.
