Luis Molina-Pantin’s is an archaeological work, located beyond the photographic. It accumulates apparently devalued collective places and brings them to a standstill, looking at them intensely until they are broken. Looking at what no one else sees. Finds, excavates, captures. It takes the reverse side of things, without the slightest intention of adding more to it than it has.
The uncertainty of Venezuelan bank customers in 1993 added to the political uncertainty resulting from the “Caracazo”, a failed military coup d’état and the removal of the Venezuelan president as a result of the unprecedented ruling in a corruption trial.
As a visual inventory of the collapse of Venezuela’s economy and banking system (1994-2010), Luis Molina-Pantin compiles ruined facades of bank branches, piggy banks and logos of failed banks, covers of books on the economic crisis, banknotes of different denominations that circulated before and after the financial crash, and stills from advertisements of bankrupt institutions.
