Originally published in Buenos Aires in 1947, this volume gathers together ten of the best short stories by Felisberto Hernández. These stories combine the finest prose of the magnificent Uruguayan writer with the most characteristic features of his work: plain, sober narratives with a touch of local color, which evoke the writer’s world and time, with its old houses, patios, music, a ramshackle theater, a piano, and above all an atmosphere of penumbra that gently moves the stories toward other realities that surpass the image of everyday life. The volume draws its name from the first story.
The ending is the best possible preamble to the nine stories which follow: “El balcón,” “El acomodador,” Menos Julia,” La mujer parecida a mí,” Mi primer concierto,” “El comedor oscuro,” “El corazón verde,” “Muebles El Canario,” and “Las dos historias.”
