“La recepción inicial de Pedro Páramo” was born of the process of intellectual formation which, for author Jorge Zepeda, signified a profound knowledge of Mexican literature and of theories concerning the study of literary reception, an itinerary described by Dietrich Rall in his “Preface” to this book. The result of many years of research, it gathers all of the documentation relevant to its period of study (1955-1963), giving rise to veritable discoveries.
Through the analogy of a conflictive synthesis, Zepeda approaches Rulfo’s novel and the diversity of reactions it provoked in the eight years following its publication, faithfully describing this panorama. The result has nothing to do with the commonplaces normally invoked to explain the critical reception to Pedro Páramo on its appearance in 1955.
