Desastre Natural is a project conceived by Alberto Baraya and Jonathan Hernández, to be carried out through the fall and winter of 2014 in Mexico City. It includes an exhibition at the Casa de Lago, a book published by RM, a concert in the aviary of the zoo in Chapultepec Park, a series of lectures, and a film cycle.
The book is an extension of the authors’ research into the crossroads of lega- lity and illegality, the visible and the invisible, the overflowing of reality, clima- tic phenomena, public and private zoos, the transfiguration of economics and politics, disasters, and the efficiency of inefficiency.
The volume contains two texts of paradoxical relevance and topicality: “Paletón and the Musical Elephant,” by Jorge Ibargüengoitia and “The Origin of Species,” by Yuri Herrera. A re-contextualized children’s story and an text written especially for the project that seeks to decipher the enigma of con- temporary Mexico through humor and fiction.
