White Elephant is the catalogue of Franz West’s exhibition at the Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo.
Published in English and Spanish, this catalogue shows the works exhibited at the Tamayo, some of them never seen before.
The project shows the relationship of his work with people as it plays with the implications that are often given to museums whose power lies in transforming what they contain into cult objects.
Naturally, the exhibition presents some of his “portable sculptures”, which, as a counterpoint to the radical attitudes of Viennese actionism, proposed an alternative based on the interaction of the public with small objects that required attitudes of physical comedy, of slapstick, in order to be considered complete works.
The book includes sculptures, collages, furniture and adaptable objects that allow us to approach the production of this international figure who has played a determining role in the development of artistic creation after 1965 and in the notions held about the spectator and the object, beauty and ugliness, art and life.
