This publication tours the Museo de Arte de Ponce’s collection of highly regarded Spanish painting and sculpture. The museum, located in San Juan, Puerto Rico, celebrates the richness of Western art from the dawn of the Renaissance through to the end of the 19th century.
The Museo de Arte de Ponce is a Puerto Rican institution whose main focus is European art. Over the years, it has assembled a Spanish collection as eclectic as it is interesting, representative of an impressive range of periods, genres, techniques, formats and schools over more than four centuries of Spanish painting and sculpture.
The present book, dedicated to Spanish art before 1900, was made possible by a generous research and publication grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which provided the opportunity to inventory and reexamine the 49 objects included in the catalog, featuring works by Claudio Coello, Francisco de Goya, Pedro de Mena, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, El Greco, and Joaquín Sorolla, among others.
